Trench Heating and Air Curtains: A Perfect Combination for Hanley Library
Hanley Library in Stoke-on-Trent has recently moved to a new location and SPC is proud to have been involved in the project by manufacturing Natural Trench Heating units and Forcefield Air Curtains for the new building.
Metropolitan Trench Heating is a discreet and efficient way to heat a space, particularly one with large areas of glazing. The trench grilles and trim at Hanley Library are finished in anodised satin silver and will effectively eliminate draughts by allowing cool air to drop into the trench and pass through the coils, picking up heat and circulating it over the window. The warmed air then circulates around the room before eventually cooling and falling to the floor.
Two Forcefield Air Curtains have also been installed in the entrance areas, which will help to keep the library warm and comfortable for visitors. Air curtains create a barrier of air that prevents draughts and heat loss, making them ideal for entrances and doorways.
The work was carried out by Staffordshire Plumbing and Heating Ltd.

SPC's Coil Heat Exchangers: Manufactured to the Highest Standards
Specialised Machinery
One example of our specialised machinery is our Header End Closer machine. This machine is used to create copper headers for our coil heat exchanger units. Unlike other companies, who typically need to braze a separate end cap onto their coil headers (as shown in the image), our machine uses a spinning former which closes the tube end by friction whilst heating the copper and forming a domed end cap from a single copper tube.
Unique Process
This unique process offers a number of advantages, including:
Lower material costs: By forming the end cap from the same copper tube as the header, we eliminate the need for separate end caps, which can save our customers significant material costs.
Reduced production time: The End Closer machine is a highly efficient way to close tube ends, and it can significantly reduce the time required to manufacture coil headers. This helps us to keep our costs down and pass on the savings to our customers.
Improved product quality: The End Closer machine produces high-quality, leak-proof end caps that are perfectly matched to the header tube diameter. This helps to ensure the long-term reliability and performance of our coil heat exchangers.
To see how our End Closer machine works, watch our video below:
Coil Heat Exchanger Manufacturing
In addition to our End Closer machine, we also have a variety of other specialised areas that allow us to produce high-quality coil heat exchangers quickly and efficiently. This includes:
- A fin press for creating precise and consistent fins
- A tube bending machine for shaping tubes to our required specification
- A brazing department to braze the parts of our coil heat exchangers
- A quality control department that inspects and pressure tests every coil heat exchanger before it leaves our factory

Exploring Efficient Industrial Heating Systems: Radiant Heating, Air Curtains and Unit Heaters!
Radiant Heating
Radiant heating is a game-changer in the industrial heating environment by efficiently transmitting heat without affecting the surrounding air, resulting in no energy loss or degradation. This innovative system directly warms objects and surfaces within a given area, delivering uniform and comfortable warmth. Its energy-efficient design minimises heat dissipation and maintains a steady temperature, making it perfect for large industrial facilities.
Air Curtains
Air Curtains are a vital component in maintaining indoor comfort while managing energy costs. Air Curtains produce invisible barriers of air that help prevent heat loss or gain through open doors and entrances. By creating a barrier, Air Curtains reduce the amount of cold or warm air entering or escaping, maintaining a stable indoor temperature and improving energy efficiency. These are ideal for loading bay areas, distribution centres and open entrances.
Unit Heaters
Unit Heaters are versatile heating systems widely used in industrial settings. They efficiently distribute heat throughout a space, providing a quick and reliable solution to combat cold temperatures. Unit Heaters are compact, easy to install, and can be powered by various energy sources, making them adaptable to diverse industrial environments.
Optimising Industrial Heating Systems
Understanding these heating technologies is important for optimising industrial heating systems, enhancing productivity, and reducing energy consumption.
If you’re looking to upgrade your facility’s heating system, consider the benefits of Radiant Heating, Air Curtains and Unit Heaters.

Enhancing Manufacturing Efficiency: SPC Supplies Improved Cooling Coils for Sony's UK Technology Centre
Project Details
Eight large chilled water cooling coils were designed and manufactured by SPC, manufacturers of heating and cooling solutions for the HVAC industry, for Sony Europe B.V.’s UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) in Pencoed, Bridgend (Wales).
Original 1991 Barkell Air Handling Units provide the ventilation and air conditioning of the 34,000 m³ production hall, where Sony Broadcast and Professional Cameras and Systems are manufactured.
Over several months, the Air Handling Units have undergone significant energy upgrades to improve energy efficiency such as installing EC fans, however, the original large chilled water cooling coils were in poor age-related condition following numerous historical repairs. In addition, the cooling load requirements had increased combined with higher and more frequent seasonal external summer temperatures.
Site Survey
Kelvin Lewis, HVAC Consultant, directly contacted our Area Sales Manager for the South West, Chris Ward and enquired if he could attend a site visit to provide a site survey of the coils.
A site survey was organised the following week, and Richard Meskimmon, Technical Manager, attended the survey to provide technical assistance.
Chris Ward said:
“We met with Kelvin Lewis, from Consult Services, and Jon Jones from Sony. They both walked us around the AHU plant area and ran through what was required from SPC. Richard and I took measurements of the several coils so that we could provide a quote for the project.”
Manufacturing
In early 2022, an order was placed for the replacement chilled water cooling coils, which were soon placed into manufacture. It was requested that the coils be manufactured in stages so that the installation of the new coils could be carried out over a period of time.
SPC has manufactured heating and cooling coils for more than four decades for commercial and industrial applications. From sheet metal assembly and fin pressing to testing and painting, all of our coils are made by hand by a team of highly skilled operatives from our Leicester-based factory.
Over a period of a few weeks, the cooling coils were manufactured each with baffle plates, drain pans and aluminium vinyl-coated fins. Each coil was tested to 22 bar g before being prepared for painting, packaging, and dispatch.
Richard Meskimmon, Technical Manager said:
“To increase the available capacity of the cooling coils they were selected, by SPC, against more challenging conditions that the original coils. Combined with new, clean and uncorroded heat transfer surfaces, the coils now offer Sony the ability to significantly increase their rates of cooling.”
Installation
Installation was carried out by Jon Jones and his facilities management team.
Jon said:
“The installation of the cooling coils went well with no issues! During the extreme and prolonged high peak temperatures of summer 2022, we were able to control and maintain production hall temperatures with BMS-controlled coil ‘capacity’ to spare. There was significant cooling capacity compared to the original coils. Great job SPC!”
Jon Jones was asked a few questions about his involvement with the project and his experience with SPC.
Jon was asked what made SPC stand out compared to other manufacturers. He replied:
“The prompt site visit by Chris and Richard! They both quickly established and designed suitable replacement coils which could be installed in restricted available space with enhanced performance of the original coils”
How was your customer journey and experience with SPC?
“The customer journey and service were very good. I received accurate and concise technical drawings with performance calculations with a short lead time. The Sales team provided excellent service and communication was great from initial contact through to design, manufacturing, delivery and post-installation.”
