Enhancing Manufacturing Efficiency: SPC Supplies Improved Cooling Coils for Sony's UK Technology Centre

Project Details

Eight large chilled water cooling coils were designed and manufactured by SPC, manufacturers of heating and cooling solutions for the HVAC industry, for Sony Europe B.V.’s UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) in Pencoed, Bridgend (Wales).

Original 1991 Barkell Air Handling Units provide the ventilation and air conditioning of the 34,000 m³ production hall, where Sony Broadcast and Professional Cameras and Systems are manufactured.

Over several months, the Air Handling Units have undergone significant energy upgrades to improve energy efficiency such as installing EC fans, however, the original large chilled water cooling coils were in poor age-related condition following numerous historical repairs. In addition, the cooling load requirements had increased combined with higher and more frequent seasonal external summer temperatures.

Site Survey

Kelvin Lewis, HVAC Consultant, directly contacted our Area Sales Manager for the South West, Chris Ward and enquired if he could attend a site visit to provide a site survey of the coils.

A site survey was organised the following week, and Richard Meskimmon, Technical Manager, attended the survey to provide technical assistance.

Chris Ward said:

“We met with Kelvin Lewis, from Consult Services, and Jon Jones from Sony. They both walked us around the AHU plant area and ran through what was required from SPC. Richard and I took measurements of the several coils so that we could provide a quote for the project.”

Manufacturing

In early 2022, an order was placed for the replacement chilled water cooling coils, which were soon placed into manufacture. It was requested that the coils be manufactured in stages so that the installation of the new coils could be carried out over a period of time.

SPC has manufactured heating and cooling coils for more than four decades for commercial and industrial applications. From sheet metal assembly and fin pressing to testing and painting, all of our coils are made by hand by a team of highly skilled operatives from our Leicester-based factory.

Over a period of a few weeks, the cooling coils were manufactured each with baffle plates, drain pans and aluminium vinyl-coated fins. Each coil was tested to 22 bar g before being prepared for painting, packaging, and dispatch.

Richard Meskimmon, Technical Manager said:

“To increase the available capacity of the cooling coils they were selected, by SPC, against more challenging conditions that the original coils. Combined with new, clean and uncorroded heat transfer surfaces, the coils now offer Sony the ability to significantly increase their rates of cooling.”

Images of the coil manufacturing

Installation

Installation was carried out by Jon Jones and his facilities management team.

Jon said:

“The installation of the cooling coils went well with no issues! During the extreme and prolonged high peak temperatures of summer 2022, we were able to control and maintain production hall temperatures with BMS-controlled coil ‘capacity’ to spare. There was significant cooling capacity compared to the original coils. Great job SPC!”

Installation of the new cooling coils

Jon Jones was asked a few questions about his involvement with the project and his experience with SPC.

Jon was asked what made SPC stand out compared to other manufacturers. He replied:

“The prompt site visit by Chris and Richard! They both quickly established and designed suitable replacement coils which could be installed in restricted available space with enhanced performance of the original coils”

How was your customer journey and experience with SPC?

“The customer journey and service were very good. I received accurate and concise technical drawings with performance calculations with a short lead time. The Sales team provided excellent service and communication was great from initial contact through to design, manufacturing, delivery and post-installation.”

SPC Supplies Colourful Pink Fan Convectors to St James Church, Nottingham

Heating and Ventilating Services of Nottingham, chose SPC’s renowned Belgravia Classic fan convectors as the perfect solution to provide energy-efficient heating for St James Church in Nottingham.

St James Church underwent a heating system upgrade which included the installation of a new boiler and SPC Belgravia Classic fan convectors.

Before the installation of our fan convectors, the church used to have old and outdated radiators which required a much-needed upgrade. To match the old radiators and the interior details of the church, the fan convectors had a special paint finish applied – RAL 3014 Antique pink.

Rev’d. Mike Forsyth from St James Church said:

Our Church is a large single brick historic barn conversion with a wooden roof… neither holding the heat in winter nor keeping cool in summer! Our old system had failed beyond repair and we were looking for something which would keep us warm in winter and be better for the environment. Simon from H&V Serve recommended these convector heaters because they would rapidly heat the church to a comfortable temperature without needing to run the heating for hours in advance like the old system (therefore better for the environment and on our heating bills).

These convector heaters have been installed and we have not been disappointed. One concern was that they would be noisy, causing a disruption during the services, however with three fan settings we can turn to the lowest and quietest setting during the services once the church has been brought to the desired temperature. We are very pleased that the convector heaters have been finished in a colour in keeping with our historic building. We now look forward to a warm and welcoming church this winter!”.

SPC offers EC motors as standard across the range of Belgravia fan convector units. Due to their electronic commutation, EC motors offer significant energy savings compared to conventional AC-driven motors.

These energy savings occur across the range of rotational speeds and are particularly pronounced at low speeds where the efficiency of a conventional AC motor decreases remarkability.

BioGrid UV Air Steriliser: Goodbye bacteria, mould, viruses and COVID!

BioGrid UV Air Steriliser

Goodbye bacteria, mould, viruses and COVID!

SPC has recently launched a new product for the air purification industry. With the need for better indoor air quality and ventilation, the BioGrid UV Air Steriliser is the ideal solution. Read on to find out more…

What is Ultraviolet (UV) light?

Ultraviolet (UV) light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and sits between visible light and X-rays. The sun emits three different types of ultraviolet light: UVA, UVB and UVC.

UVC light is the most intense out of the three and is capable of disrupting the nucleic acid of bacteria or viruses to render them incapable of reproduction, including airborne COVID!

BioGrid UV Air Steriliser

The BioGrid UV Air Steriliser uses germicidal radiation (UVC) to disrupt the nucleic acid of bacteria or viruses to render them incapable of reproduction. The unit sits within a 600x600mm suspended ceiling grid or can be in a plasterboard ceiling. The unit is whisper-quiet in operation, perfect for any indoor environment.

BioGrid UV Animation

Contaminated air is drawn into the unit by the fan

The air is then sterilised, using germicidal radiation, inside the activation chamber to neutralise airborne bacteria and viruses

The sterillised air is then blown our if the unit into the area below

Why choose the BioGrid UV Air Steriliser?

  • Kills 99.9999% of harmful viruses and bacteria, including Coronaviruses in the air
  • Use of a Philips UVC bulb – a trusted, reputable and well-known brand worldwide
  • A single unit can treat floor areas of up to 100m²
  • Manufactured in Leicester, UK

UVC vs HEPA filters

Do you really want to ask your maintenance team to remove and dispose of CONTAMINATED HEPA filters?

  • Whilst HEPA filters do catch bacteria and viruses they don’t destroy them, unlike UVC. Mould, viruses and bacteria will continue to thrive in the filter until the filter is destroyed, potentially exposing your maintenance/facility management team to harmful viruses and bacteria collected by the filter.
  • HEPA filters also reduce airflow within the system and therefore the fans in the ventilation system will have to run at higher speeds, therefore increasing the running costs.

SPC Belgravia Fan Convector Range Compatible with Low Water Temperature Heating Systems

Our range of SPC Belgravia fan convectors now comes with the option of having an enhanced coil, making them suitable for use with low water temperature heating systems.

The UK government announced last year its ambitious goal to increase the annual installation of electric heat pumps from 30,000 to 600,000 by 2028. This initiative is a key part of their commitment to building a cleaner, greener future for the country and reducing net carbon emissions by 2050. Utilising low water temperature heating systems is a crucial step toward achieving this environmental goal.

To support this change, we at SPC have incorporated enhanced coils into our Fan Convector range. This enables our fan convectors to be used with low water temperature heating systems, provided by heat pumps. With lower water temperatures becoming more common, we wanted to ensure that we can offer our customers a solution to maintain their emitter heat outputs.

A heat pump is a unit that extracts heat from the air, ground or water concentrates it to a higher temperature and delivers it elsewhere, for example, the heating system. Heat pump systems are designed to extract a greater amount of heat energy from the surrounding environment than the energy they consume in doing so, therefore they can act as a more efficient source of heat than a conventional electric heater, producing 2 to 3 times (or more for very efficient systems) as much heat output as they consume in electricity input.

Our enhanced coils incorporate an additional copper pipe and fins, increasing the surface area for heat transfer. This additional surface area offsets the reduced temperature difference available to maintain the rate of heat output. With the use of enhanced coils in our fan convectors, you can future-proof your fan convectors for any changes in your heating system i.e. the installation of a heat pump. Our enhanced coils can still be used with other heating systems such as traditional boilers.

When the time comes for when you decide to change to a more sustainable heating system that uses low water temperatures, your fan convectors will not need to be changed as they will have the necessary setup for lower water temperature heating systems.

Richard Meskimmon, Technical Manager for SPC said;

“The majority of fan convector casings can incorporate enhanced coils in the existing overall dimensions or with very little modification. Unlike radiators, there is no penalty in terms of reduced wall space and retrofit fan convectors units for low water temperature systems can be seamlessly incorporated.”.

Fan convectors can be utilised in churches, schools, colleges, libraries, sports halls, hotels, boardrooms, hospitals, leisure centres, and a wide range of shops, offices, and industrial buildings.
