Belgravia Fan Convectors: Partnering with Totus Engineering for a Successful School Project

The school summer holidays are always a busy time for SPC and this year was no exception!

Replacing Old Fan Convectors with New, Modern Units

The project we are sharing today is from a summer school Fan Convectors project that took place in Plymouth, earlier in the year, in partnership with Totus Engineering. The school originally had our Belgravia Fan Convectors which were installed when the school was first built, however, these were almost over 40 years old – this just shows how robust and long-lasting our Fan Convectors are! As these Fan Convectors were reaching their end, it was decided that they should be replaced with our newer, modern and more energy-efficient units.

Enhanced Comfort and Energy Efficiency

The old Fan Convectors were replaced and installed with new units throughout the school and paired with our Modulo v2 controller allowing for proportional speed control providing enhanced comfort and energy efficiency.

Positive Feedback from Installers and Caretaker

Several Belgravia Classic and Supreme units were manufactured for this school project; in the cloakroom and hallway area, our Belgravia Classic K-style unit was used. These units are vertically concealed with a rear-facing access panel and bottom inlet and top outlet spigots.

One of the installers on the project commented saying:

“The units were easy and simple to install.”

The Caretaker said:

“The new Belgravia Fan Convectors are easy to control using the Modulo v2 Controller.”

We are delighted to have been able to help this school with their Fan Convector project and we are confident that the new units will provide them with many years of trouble-free service.

The Need for Low-Carbon Heating

Direct-fired heat generators, commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings, emit harmful carbon dioxide directly into the atmosphere. These emissions contribute substantially to climate change and pose a significant threat to our environment.

The Role of Low-Carbon Emitters

Indirect emitters, which rely on fossil fuel-burning boilers, can be replaced with low-carbon heating emitters to reduce emissions. These heat emitters operate at lower temperatures, compatible with efficient low-temperature generators such as heat pumps.

Heat Pumps: Efficient Heating Solutions

Heat pumps, known for their energy efficiency, transfer heat from a low-temperature source, such as air or ground, to a higher-temperature destination, such as a home or building. They are an excellent choice for reducing carbon emissions in the heating sector.

Oversized or Enhanced Emitters: Optimising Heat Pump Performance

Traditional emitters, designed for higher temperatures, can hinder the performance of heat pumps. Oversized or enhanced emitters, specifically designed for heat pumps, ensure optimal efficiency and maximise energy savings.

Cost-Effectiveness of Low-Carbon Heating Solutions

While the initial cost of oversized or enhanced emitters may be higher than traditional emitters, their long-term energy savings outweigh the upfront investment. As demand for these emitters increases, their cost is expected to decline, making them even more cost-effective.

Embracing a Low-Carbon Heating Future

Transitioning to a low-carbon heating future requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses phasing out direct-fired heat generators, adopting low-carbon emitters, and utilising efficient heat pumps. By embracing these technologies, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint, contribute to a cleaner environment, and create a more sustainable heating infrastructure.

Benefits of Low-Carbon Heating for Industrial and Commercial Businesses

  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Lower energy costs
  • Improved air quality
  • Increased employee productivity
  • Enhanced corporate reputation

The Future of Heating in Industrial and Commercial Sectors

Businesses in the industrial and commercial sectors have a major opportunity to lead the way in this transition. By adopting low-carbon heating solutions, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint, save money on energy costs, and improve their environmental performance.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Trench Heating and Air Curtains: A Perfect Combination for Hanley Library

Hanley Library in Stoke-on-Trent has recently moved to a new location and SPC is proud to have been involved in the project by manufacturing Natural Trench Heating units and Forcefield Air Curtains for the new building.

Metropolitan Trench Heating is a discreet and efficient way to heat a space, particularly one with large areas of glazing. The trench grilles and trim at Hanley Library are finished in anodised satin silver and will effectively eliminate draughts by allowing cool air to drop into the trench and pass through the coils, picking up heat and circulating it over the window. The warmed air then circulates around the room before eventually cooling and falling to the floor.

Two Forcefield Air Curtains have also been installed in the entrance areas, which will help to keep the library warm and comfortable for visitors. Air curtains create a barrier of air that prevents draughts and heat loss, making them ideal for entrances and doorways.

The work was carried out by Staffordshire Plumbing and Heating Ltd.

SPC's Coil Heat Exchangers: Manufactured to the Highest Standards

SPC is a leading UK manufacturer of Coil Heat Exchangers, and we're proud to say that we build our units by hand in our Leicester-based factory. This allows us to have complete control over the quality of our products and to offer our customers the most competitive prices.

Specialised Machinery

One example of our specialised machinery is our Header End Closer machine. This machine is used to create copper headers for our coil heat exchanger units. Unlike other companies, who typically need to braze a separate end cap onto their coil headers (as shown in the image), our machine uses a spinning former which closes the tube end by friction whilst heating the copper and forming a domed end cap from a single copper tube.

Unique Process

This unique process offers a number of advantages, including:

Lower material costs: By forming the end cap from the same copper tube as the header, we eliminate the need for separate end caps, which can save our customers significant material costs.

Reduced production time: The End Closer machine is a highly efficient way to close tube ends, and it can significantly reduce the time required to manufacture coil headers. This helps us to keep our costs down and pass on the savings to our customers.

Improved product quality: The End Closer machine produces high-quality, leak-proof end caps that are perfectly matched to the header tube diameter. This helps to ensure the long-term reliability and performance of our coil heat exchangers.

Coil Heat Exchanger Manufacturing

In addition to our End Closer machine, we also have a variety of other specialised areas that allow us to produce high-quality coil heat exchangers quickly and efficiently. This includes:

  • A fin press for creating precise and consistent fins
  • A tube bending machine for shaping tubes to our required specification
  • A brazing department to braze the parts of our coil heat exchangers
  • A quality control department that inspects and pressure tests every coil heat exchanger before it leaves our factory
