SPC has introduced Metropolitan HC, a new fan-assisted addition to its Metropolitan trench heating and cooling range. Installed within the floor alongside full-height glazing, Metropolitan HC actively draws air through its heat exchanger rather than relying on natural buoyancy, giving specifiers a higher-output option for projects that need heating, cooling, or both from a single unobtrusive floor-recessed unit. The range is available in heating-only, cooling-only, or combined 2-pipe and 4-pipe configurations, across four standard size combinations.

Why Metropolitan HC has been added to the range
Full-height glazing is increasingly paired with a need for both winter heating and summer cooling from the same perimeter zone, without visible equipment interrupting the building’s lines. Metropolitan HC has been developed to meet that demand directly, using powerful brushless DC (EC) fans matched to a coil heat exchanger designed to maximise the rate at which heat is added to, or removed from, the space air.

How it works
Active airflow through the coil. Unlike traditional trench heaters, where fans simply assist natural buoyancy, Metropolitan HC’s fans blow air directly through the heat exchanger, with the inlet and outlet arranged to reduce short-circuiting and air bypass.
Heating and cooling flexibility. Choose heating-only, cooling-only, 2-pipe heating/cooling changeover, or 4-pipe heating and cooling independently, depending on the project’s requirements.
Sizes built around the project. Four standard width and height combinations (245x160mm, 290x160mm, 320x130mm and 360x210mm) are available in standard lengths from 900mm to 3,000mm. Individual units can be butted together and piped in parallel to form longer continuous runs, with bespoke lengths available on request.
BMS integration. Fan speed is modulated via a 0-10V signal, with valve actuators and local control options also available, allowing Metropolitan HC to be integrated with a project’s existing building management system.
Where it fits in the range
Metropolitan HC joins SPC’s existing Metropolitan Natural, Powered, and Fan-Assisted Electric trench ranges, all of which remain available. This gives specifiers a wider choice of trench heating and cooling formats to match the demands of individual projects.
Where it fits in the range
Metropolitan HC is suited to commercial and public buildings with full-height glazing, including offices, reception areas, and other spaces where perimeter heating and cooling is needed without visible equipment at floor or ceiling level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Four standard width and height combinations are available (245x160mm, 290x160mm, 320x130mm and 360x210mm), in standard lengths from 900mm to 3,000mm. Units can be butted together for longer continuous runs, and bespoke dimensions can be discussed with SPC.
Noise levels range from NR17 to NR39 depending on unit length and fan speed, based on standard test conditions. SPC can advise on the right speed setting for a project’s acoustic requirements.
Where chilled water temperatures fall below the dewpoint of the room air, an optional drip tray with a 15mm drain connection is available, along with a condensate pump if moisture needs to be pumped away.
