St Mary's Community and Leisure Centre, Southampton

The project forms part of a wider mechanical services upgrade at the leisure centre, developed under a Design and Build performance specification targeting reduced carbon emissions in line with Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) objectives. The building houses squash courts, changing rooms, a fitness suite and a large sports hall used extensively by sports clubs and private groups, alongside air source heat pump and high-efficiency gas boiler plant serving the wider heating demand. Within this scheme, SPC was specified by Leonard Engineering Design Associates Ltd to supply the sports hall’s radiant heating, along with fan convectors and an air curtain for adjoining spaces.

Joe Vincent, SPC’s Area Sales Manager for the South, worked with MJG Mechanical Services Ltd to specify a zone-appropriate solution across the centre. The open sports hall, with its high ceiling and large floor area, called for radiant heating.

For the squash courts and climbing area, Belgravia Supreme fan convectors were specified to provide fast-responding, targeted heat. The outer lobby area, exposed to frequent door traffic, was fitted with an AIRDOR Forcefield air curtain to maintain an effective air barrier and reduce heat loss at the entrance.

Open Sports Hall — iTwelve Industrial Radiant Panels (6 runs)

• 6 x 24,000mm runs (RP‑1 to RP‑6), each built from 8 x 3000mm panels, 900mm width.

Squash Courts and Climbing Area — Belgravia Supreme Fan Convectors (x3)

• Model: SPR90, inverted case with reversed airflow (BS-INVCS-RAF)
• Motor: ECM
• Controls: remote on/off thermostat (RT1), low water temperature cut-out
• Features: AF3 washable air filter, connection box for remote switch
• Finish: Textured white RAL 9010
• Design basis: Air on 18°C, Water 80/60°C.

Outer Lobby Area — AIRDOR Forcefield Air Curtain (x1)

• Model: Horizontal H1500W, exposed ceiling-mounted
• Controls: Delta waterside controller with proportional valve control, on/off and speed-change rocker switches
• Motor: ECM
• Mounting height: 1.8m to 3.5m
• Duty: up to 15.9kW at high speed
• Finish: Textured white RAL 9010 with black RAL 9005 grilles

The installation gives St Mary’s Community and Leisure Centre a zoned, low-temperature heating solution across its sports hall, squash courts, climbing area and lobby, supporting the centre’s wider decarbonisation programme. This project demonstrates the iTwelve range’s suitability for high-bay sports facilities requiring silent, direct radiant heat.
